Join DJ Michael Laycock (Electropical), guest DJ Hubbz (The Payback), and percussionist Raphael Geronimo (Rumba Calzada) on Saturday, November 18 for the final edition of Worldbeat Sessions at the Backstage Lounge.
You know what they say about “All good things…” Sadly, after almost four decades, the Backstage Lounge will shut down at the end of this year and eventually reopen as a restaurant without musical acts. So Saturday, November 18 will be the last call for Worldbeat Sessions at this legendary Vancouver venue.
Come help us mark the end of an era in this city and move to some fine global grooves. One last time, we’ll explore the space where Latin, African, funk, and electronic music meet — mixing sounds from the past, present, and future. Huge thanks to everyone who has supported this musical experiment over the past three years at this gem of a waterfront venue.
Guest DJ Hubbz is one-half of the dynamic duo behind one of the longest running weekly gigs in Vancouver: The Payback (with DJ Waxwork) at the Bayside Lounge. From funk and soul to Latin and dub, Hubbz cooks up a musical feast. He seamlessly threads borders of all genres while keeping the floor on lock. Hubbz last appeared at Worldbeat Sessions in September 2016. Hubbz in the mix: soundcloud.com/hubbz/madrugada-boogaloo
DJ Michael Laycock launched Worldbeat Sessions in March 2015 and has shared the stage with some of the city’s best selectors of global grooves (including DJs Bassos Rancheros, Kut Gomez, Evo, and Nils, to name just a few). In late 2014, he wrapped up a decade-long run as co-producer of Electropical, an acclaimed monthly worldbeat dance party. Michael in the mix: mixcloud.com/laycock1/worldbeat-sessions-may-2016-mix
Raphael Geronimo has been an integral part of the Vancouver Latin and jazz scene for more than a decade, performing, teaching, writing and directing for many of the city’s best-loved groups. He leads Rumba Calzada, the powerhouse Latin, salsa, and Afro-Cuban band founded by his father in 1991.
With Worldbeat Sessions, Michael teams up with an evolving roster of DJs and musicians to explore the global soundscape. From Latin to funk, Arabian to Balkan, and Indian to African, each edition of Worldbeat Sessions is a new international dance floor journey.
Worldbeat Sessions starts around 10 pm (when the play ends next door) at the Backstage Lounge, 1585 Johnston St, Granville Island. Cover: $10. Groups are always welcome.
