Worldbeat Sessions returns Sat Sept 17 with guests DJ Hubbz and percussionist Robin Layne at Backstage Lounge

worldbeat_sessions_flyer_CS5_Sept2016_Hubbz_v1Join DJ Michael Laycock (Electropical), guest DJ Hubbz (The Payback), and percussionist Robin Layne (Locarno, Mazacote) on Saturday, September 17 at the Backstage Lounge for the return of Worldbeat Sessions – a night of danceable global grooves.

In round nine of Worldbeat Sessions, we’ll go deep into the space where Latin, African, funk, and electronic music meet as we explore the grooves we have in common. The dance floor is guaranteed to be cookin’!

Guest DJ Hubbz is one-half of the dynamic duo behind one of the longest running weekly gigs in Vancouver: THE PAYBACK (with DJ Evo) at the Bayside Lounge. From funk and soul to Latin and dub, Hubbz cooks up a musical feast. He seamlessly threads borders of all genres while keeping the floor on lock. Hubbz last appeared at Worldbeat Sessions in November.

DJ Michael Laycock launched Worldbeat Sessions in March 2015 and has shared the stage with some of the city’s best selectors of global grooves (including DJs Evo, Hubbz, Bassos Rancheros, Kut Gomez, Lady Ra, Nils, Su Comandante, and Tasteoftee). In late 2014, he wrapped up a decade-long run as co-producer of Electropical (with DJ Marc Fournier), an acclaimed monthly worldbeat dance party.

Robin Layne is a regular fixture on the B.C. festival circuit, collaborating with a wide spectrum of folk and world artists. His recent touring engagements have led him to Mexico, Italy, China, and the U.S. He’s followed his love of world music to Cuba, Guinea, Mali, and Mexico, studying under master drummers and marimbists. He currently performs with world music groups Locarno, Tambura Rasa, and Mazacote and is in demand as a freelance percussionist for recordings, performances, and tours.

With Worldbeat Sessions, Michael teams up with an evolving roster of worldbeat DJs and musicians to explore the global soundscape. From Latin to funk, Arabian to Balkan, and Indian to African, each edition of Worldbeat Sessions is a new international dance floor journey.

Worldbeat Sessions starts around 10 pm (when the play ends next door) at the Backstage Lounge, 1585 Johnston St, Granville Island. Cover: $10. Groups are always welcome.

Drink specials: We’ll have a deal on Fat Tug IPA and White Bark Witbier from the good people at Driftwood Brewery. Details TBA — stay tuned…
